Dr. Kozar is board certified in Osteoopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine, Sports Medicine and Family Medicine, and a Fellow of American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine. He spends 60% of his time practicing musculoskeletal medicine exclusively, with a 50-50 mix of sports medicine and acute and chronic pain management. In addition, he is a registered musculoskeletal sonographer, teaching internalionally since 2010.
In his academic role, he serves as VCOM’s ONMM3 Residency Program Director, where he is also a Professor, OMM & Sports Medicine and teaches in the PPC-OMM course for students. Dr Kozar has multiple active research lines and is currently directing over 14 OMSs, 5 residents/fellows and 3 Virginia Tech graduate program cadidates in areas of MSK/Utrasound research focusing on:
- Patellar tendon health in collegiate athetes, serially over multiple seasons
- Thoracolumbar fascia glide impairments in those w and w/o acute & chronic LBP
- Effects of light on PRP and other regenerative concentrates
- Effects of OMT on dynamic motion of the thoracoabdominal diaphram, gallbladder, liver, and thoracic duct
He was recognized as VCOM’s Researcher of the Year in 2022.
Dr. Kozar’s interests lie in neuromuscular control of functional rehabilitative approaches, diagnostic and therapeutic uses of musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK), Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, as well as regenerative therapies. Since 2006, he has given many national lectures and hands-on workshops at AMSSM, AOASM, AAOM, AAO, AOA & NPI on these topics.
Prior to joining VCOM in fall 2015, he had 13+ years in private musculoskeletal / sports medicine practice, along with collegiate, semiprofessional, and high school team physician experience, in the Hartford, CT region.
He is 1993 graduate of the University Notre Dame and 1998 graduate of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OUCOM), where he also completed an undergraduate teaching fellowship in OMM, then a family practice residency at Doctors Hospital, in Massillon, Ohio and then a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Toledo, under his mentor Gunnar Brolinson, DO.
